Bird Flu: A Transboundary Threat
The recent detection of bird flu along the Netherlands-Germany border has sparked concerns and prompted swift action from authorities. This highly contagious virus has already left its mark on both countries, and the situation is evolving rapidly.
On November 27th, the Dutch government confirmed bird flu on a poultry farm near Kleve, Germany, a town just across the border. This news came as three Dutch poultry farms and a petting zoo near the German border also reported cases. The virus had already made its presence known earlier that day in the Dutch provinces of Overijssel and Limburg, affecting a total of 270,000 birds.
In Nijmegen, a petting zoo by the German border became another victim, leading to the culling of 52 chickens by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) to prevent further spread.
To curb the virus's reach, a 10-km transport ban was imposed around affected farms, covering poultry, eggs, manure, and bedding materials. Germany established a restricted area that extends into the Netherlands, prompting the Dutch Minister of Agriculture to set up a similar zone around Millingen aan de Rijn and Groesbeek.
The NVWA is actively tracing high-risk contacts linked to the farms, and additional measures may be implemented if needed. This includes extra sampling and restrictions on high-risk businesses.
Bird flu's return to the Netherlands in October, after a six-month absence, has led to its rapid spread across multiple farms. As a result, poultry farmers nationwide have been keeping their birds indoors since October 16, 2025.
The situation is a cause for concern, as the virus's rapid spread raises questions about the potential impact on egg and poultry prices.
