The Women's Champions League delivered another thrilling encounter as Chelsea and Barcelona faced off, with a controversial draw leaving both teams with a point each.
Barcelona, the dominant force in this fixture, were looking to extend their impressive record against Chelsea. However, this time, the Blues showed a different side, one that had been elusive in recent seasons.
But here's where it gets interesting... Chelsea, with their Australian star Ellie Carpenter, took an early lead, showcasing their attacking prowess. Carpenter's strike from the edge of the box was a moment of pure brilliance, putting Chelsea ahead in the 16th minute.
Barcelona, known for their resilience, fought back quickly. Claudia Pina's corner caused chaos in the Chelsea box, leading to Ewa Pajor's equalizer. From that moment on, Chelsea dominated, creating numerous chances.
In the second half, Chelsea's Catarina Macario had a goal controversially disallowed for offside, a decision that could have changed the game's outcome. Carpenter, too, had a golden opportunity but narrowly missed the target.
Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor expressed her satisfaction and frustration: "We were the better team tonight. Our performance was exceptional, and we created so many chances. I'm happy with the goal, but we could have walked away with the win."
The draw sees Chelsea move up to sixth, but they were overtaken by Bayern Munich, who defeated PSG in Paris.
And this is the part most people miss... At the other end of the table, PSG's struggles continued as they suffered a fourth consecutive defeat. Sakina Karchaoui's early goal for PSG was quickly canceled out by Linda Dallmann, and Momoko Tanikawa's strike just after the half-hour mark put Bayern in control. Jovana Damnjanovic sealed the deal with a late goal.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid climbed to eighth with a comfortable 4-0 win over Twente, thanks to goals from Amaiur Sarriegi, Julia Bartel, Synne Jensen, and Fiamma. Roma picked up their first point with a 1-1 draw against Leuven, with Evelyne Viens' goal for the Italians canceled out by Jada Conijnenberg's penalty.
What do you think? Was the referee's decision to disallow Macario's goal fair? And will Chelsea's improved performance be enough to challenge Barcelona in the future? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
