Tennis star Destanee Aiava announces retirement, exposes the 'toxic' tennis culture
Australian tennis player Destanee Aiava has announced her retirement from professional play in an open letter, exposing the 'racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and hostile' culture within the sport. The 25-year-old, who has described tennis as her 'toxic boyfriend', revealed that her final year on tour will be a challenging one, questioning the worth of the sacrifices she's made.
Aiava's career peaked at age 17 when she reached a world ranking of No. 147. However, her current ranking of No. 235 indicates a decline. She attributed this to the sport's toxic culture, which she likened to a toxic relationship. Despite the positive experiences and friendships tennis has provided, Aiava feels it has also taken things from her, leaving her questioning the value of her sacrifices.
In her letter, Aiava highlighted the sport's racist, misogynistic, and homophobic nature, emphasizing that life should not be lived in misery or half-heartedly. She thanked the Pacific Islander community for their support and acknowledged her Samoan heritage, expressing pride in being one of the few visible representatives of her culture in the sport.
Aiava also directed strong words towards those who made her feel 'less than', including people who sent her death threats and made derogatory comments about her body and career. The comment section of her post was filled with supportive messages, including a few heart emojis from 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens.
Looking ahead, Aiava is excited about a life guided by purpose, creativity, and passion. She is eager to explore new paths, stating, 'I don't know what this year will look like or where tennis fits into it. What I do know is that this chapter will end on my terms.'
This powerful announcement has sparked discussions about the state of tennis and the need for change. Aiava's courage in speaking out has encouraged others to reflect on the sport's culture and the importance of creating a more inclusive and supportive environment.
