Janis and Blaine Carmena, a Canadian couple, found themselves in an unexpected situation when they decided to purchase a luxury yacht. What began as a dream of living on the water turned into a challenging yet rewarding journey. Despite initially encountering a mold-covered wreck, they recognized the potential in this neglected vessel and made it their floating home.
The couple's story began when they first met while working on a luxury yacht two decades ago. They had since traded ocean crossings for life on land, marrying in 2002, raising two children, and pursuing new careers. However, a shift in their lives occurred in 2019 when Blaine discovered the Wind Barker, a 1969 aluminum yacht, while browsing YachtWorld. Intrigued by its classic lines, they flew to Alaska to inspect it, only to find it in a state far from the online listing.
Despite the vessel's appearance, Janis and Blaine felt an instant connection and knew they were the right people to restore it. Janis, who had been diagnosed with PTSD, felt that returning to a boat would benefit her well-being. They offered a lower price than the asking price, and the seller accepted, marking the beginning of their journey.
The couple faced numerous challenges, including making the vessel habitable, installing solar and battery systems, repairing the hull, and addressing unexpected corrosion. They also removed paint from the hull, a massive project that required outside help. Their YouTube channel, The Never-Ending Sea Trial, gained popularity as they documented their journey, attracting a dedicated following.
One significant challenge was the diesel engines' fuel consumption, which led to a major power overhaul, reducing consumption to 4.5 gallons per hour. This project boosted their online presence and allowed Blaine to leave his job. They have been cautious about sponsorships, ensuring they maintain their authenticity.
Tangaroa, the couple's vessel, stands out with its worn exterior, a choice they embrace. They have made upgrades, such as transforming it into a hybrid electric boat, and plan to continue exploring and adventure. Janis and Blaine's story is a testament to embracing life's challenges and seizing the day, even if it means living a little outside the box.
