Italy’s Cricket Breakthrough: From Pitches to the World Cup Stage (2026)

Cricket's Unlikely Rise in Italy: A Game-Changer for Integration and Passion

A Cricket Revolution in Italy? Imagine a country where cricket is as beloved as football, where the national team's success sparks a passion that could rival the iconic sport of the nation. Italy, a land known for its rich history and cultural diversity, is experiencing a unique phenomenon with its cricket team's recent triumph at the T20 World Cup. But here's where it gets controversial...

Rakvir Hassan, an experienced cricket umpire, has witnessed the confusion and curiosity of Italians towards the game. "Sometimes they think it's polo without horses!" he humorously shares. However, all that is about to change with Italy's stunning debut and victory against Nepal.

"Cricket players in Italy are ecstatic, and the love for the game is about to explode!" exclaims Zaryab Arshad, an Italo-Pakistani player based in Tuscany. The team's win has sent shockwaves through the cricket world, especially considering Italy's initial struggle to differentiate between cricket and baseball.

Italy's team is a diverse mix, including players with Australian heritage and Asian migrants who have called Italy home for three years or more. The Mosca brothers from Sydney and the Sri Lankan-born bowler, Crishan Kalugamage, now a pizza chef in Italy, were key players in the victory.

But here's the part most people miss: Italy's cricket scene is thriving, especially within its Asian communities. With 84 league sides and over 20,000 regular players, it's a hidden gem in the country's sporting landscape.

"The challenge is finding pitches," says Hassan, who handles PR for the national team. "Even the national team doesn't have its own grass pitch." In Lucca, for instance, the local team has been playing on an abandoned field for years.

Arshad believes cricket has the potential to challenge football's dominance in Italy. "At 11 years old, if you're not great at football, you might be left on the bench. Cricket offers an alternative." As an Italian team with migrant players wins, cricket could also become a catalyst for greater integration, he suggests.

"In England, a person of color is assumed to be English. I see that happening in Italy too, especially with young kids playing football. Cricket could take it even further," Arshad adds.

However, not everyone is welcoming of cricket's rise. In Monfalcone, an anti-migrant mayor, Anna Maria Cisint, banned cricket in 2024, citing the hard ball as dangerous.

Cricket's history in Italy dates back to 1793 when Nelson's sailors introduced the game in Naples. Despite its long presence, cricket has struggled to capture the hearts of most Italians. But, as Danilo Burattini, founder of the Ancona cricket club, says, "The time is ripe. Admittedly, there are many rules, but it's a game of fair play, and you don't need to be an athlete to play it."

In Palermo, Vincenzo Pintagro, a PE teacher, has dedicated 15 years to spreading cricket's love, founding a club and tapping into the talent of the local Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan communities. He introduced cricket to 44 schools, and now, more people in Palermo are playing, discovering their hidden talents.

"Kids like a sport with a bat," Pintagro says simply.

As Italy's national team gears up for their match against England, the country holds its breath. Will cricket's popularity soar even higher if the team performs well? Pintagro believes so. "We didn't lose a wicket against Nepal. Never say never!"

Cricket's journey in Italy is a fascinating tale of diversity, passion, and the power of sport to unite. Will Italy's cricket fever continue to rise? Only time will tell.
