China's Lishui Airport: A Majestic Terminal Amidst Nature's Embrace
Imagine an airport terminal that seamlessly blends into its natural surroundings, capturing the essence of misty hills and soaring birds. This is the captivating vision brought to life by MAD, a renowned Chinese studio, at Lishui Airport. Located near the city of Lishui, this airport is a stunning example of architecture in harmony with nature.
But here's where it gets intriguing: the terminal's design is a delicate balance between compactness and spaciousness. While the site covers a vast 2,267 hectares, the terminal building is a mere 12,000 square meters, featuring a curved design with eight aircraft parking bays. Yet, the interior is intentionally airy and inviting, lined with warm wooden tones and textures, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere. MAD's founder, Ma Yansong, explains the design philosophy: "We wanted the terminal to feel like an extension of the mountains, with a roof that reflects the ever-changing sky." The airport's unique one-and-a-half-story layout is a testament to its challenging construction. Completed after 17 years, the project faced significant topographic complexities due to the mountainous terrain. Fourteen distinctive umbrella-shaped columns support the lightweight roof, which features a long skylight, flooding the terminal with natural light alongside the curtain walls that offer breathtaking mountain views.
The terminal's design is further enhanced by a sunken car park, a central promenade, and a grand entrance hall connecting the arrival and departure areas. With an expected annual passenger capacity of 1.8 million by 2030 and five million by 2050, the airport is poised for growth.
MAD's portfolio includes the Fenix museum in Rotterdam, featuring a remarkable 'living room' concept, and the studio is currently working on the feather-inspired Terminal 3 at Changchun Longjia International Airport and the Harbin Airport Terminal Three, shaped like a snowflake.
