Namibia's GreenCycle Expo: Unveiling Waste Solutions and Environmental Innovation
Windhoek, November 14th (Xinhua) - The Namibia ReThink Waste GreenCycle Expo concluded its two-day event in Windhoek, shedding light on the country's innovative approach to waste management and environmental sustainability. The expo showcased local initiatives that transform waste into valuable resources, offering a unique perspective on economic opportunities within the environmental sector.
The forum, held from Thursday to Friday, was a hub of creativity and collaboration, featuring art installations, manufacturing demonstrations, and engaging dialogue sessions. It aimed to bridge the gap between waste and its potential, attracting attention from both locals and the public.
"Namibia's ranking among the top 10 cleanest countries in Africa is commendable, but it masks a hidden economic challenge," said Toini Kauluma, the expo's founder. "Valuable recyclable materials are often buried in landfills, causing an unseen drain on our resources. This expo is our response to addressing this issue directly."
The expo provided a platform for local innovators to present their solutions. One such example is Elias Nghifindwako, a dedicated member of Namibia's School Environmental Clubs. Nghifindwako's work focuses on mobilizing young people towards environmental protection, including waste collection and the transformation of discarded materials. He emphasized the importance of shifting mindsets, stating, 'Our solutions and products are often overlooked by the public, which is why we're here at this expo.'
Another notable project is the Eco Tyre Project, founded by Atushe Heita. This initiative recycles old tires into bricks and various rubber products, such as paving bricks, car mats, and athletic track surfaces. Heita's mission is to reduce tire waste, which can take over 50 years to decompose, causing significant environmental damage. By offering innovative solutions, the project aims to minimize the negative impact of tire waste.
The expo also addressed the disconnect between urban dwellers and nature, highlighting the importance of education and awareness. Toini Kauluma noted that urban settings often limit people's understanding of waste beyond what goes down the drain. Therefore, providing innovative solutions and raising awareness are crucial steps towards a sustainable future.
Furthermore, the Namibian Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sankwasa James Sankwasa, emphasized the interconnection between environmental solutions and economic growth. He underscored that sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and extractive industries are intertwined with environmental sustainability, making it a vital aspect of the country's development.
The Namibia ReThink Waste GreenCycle Expo serves as a testament to the country's commitment to environmental innovation and the potential for waste to become a valuable resource. By bringing together local innovators and the public, the expo fosters a sense of community and encourages further exploration of sustainable practices.
