And this is where it gets exciting! A team of researchers from Japan has developed L-HSi, a new solid-state carrier that overcomes many of these issues. When exposed to low-intensity light like sunlight or LEDs, L-HSi releases hydrogen, making it a highly efficient and safe alternative.

The discovery, published in Advanced Optical Materials, reveals that L-HSi consists of silicon and hydrogen in a 1:1 ratio, achieving a remarkable gravimetric hydrogen capacity of 3.44 wt.%. This is a huge step forward compared to traditional systems.

The research team, led by Mr. Hirona Ito and Professor Masahiro Miyauchi, demonstrated L-HSi's hydrogen release properties through a series of experiments. They found that L-HSi's optical bandgap of 2.13 eV, corresponding to a 600 nm wavelength, allows it to absorb visible light and release hydrogen. This process is not photothermal but rather driven by bandgap excitation, as confirmed by spectroscopic analysis.

But here's where it gets controversial... The team's long-term irradiation tests showed that L-HSi can release up to 46.7% of its bonded hydrogen atoms under extended visible-light exposure. This raises questions about the material's long-term stability and the potential environmental impact of releasing such a large amount of hydrogen.

L-HSi has the potential to revolutionize hydrogen storage, offering a safer and more efficient solution. However, further research is needed to address these concerns and optimize its performance for practical applications. The future of hydrogen as a clean fuel source is bright, but there are still challenges to overcome.
