Valencia Marathon 2025 Highlights: John Korir & Joyciline Jepkosgei Dominate, Alex Yee Shines! (2026)

The Valencia Marathon 2025 delivered a thrilling spectacle, with Kenyan athletes dominating the competition. John Korir and Joyciline Jepkosgei seized victory, while Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee made waves with an impressive performance. Let's dive into the details!

On a memorable Sunday, December 7th, the 2025 Valencia Marathon showcased the incredible talent of Kenyan runners. John Korir, already a celebrated athlete, secured his second win of the season in the men's race, and Joyciline Jepkosgei blazed a trail, setting a new world lead to claim the women's title.

Korir, fresh off his Boston Marathon win earlier in the year and a victory at the Chicago Marathon the previous year, was determined to rebound from a setback in Chicago in October. He certainly did just that! He broke away from the leading pack around the 25km mark and maintained his momentum, employing a 'negative split' strategy—running the second half of the race faster than the first—to secure the win in 2:02:25. This time was a remarkable 19 seconds faster than his previous personal best.

"People are saying the Korir name is going down but I have come here and proved to them that Korir is still there," he proudly stated after his victory. "I've closed my year with a PB. I enjoy myself here in Valencia."

Finishing in second place was Amanal Petros of Germany, a World Championships silver medalist who has enjoyed a stellar season. Petros not only finished strong but also shattered his own German national record, shaving off 55 seconds with a time of 2:04:03.

"It's not easy sometimes to say I'm proud of me but finally I can say I'm proud of me," he shared. "The season was so long, I started last year 3 December to train for all the competitions. I'm so happy that I made it. The main goal was to break my national record and I made it."

Adding to the excitement, Awet Kibrab of Norway finished third, rewriting his nation's record books by taking 1:24 off the previous best time, finishing in 2:04:24. Japan's Osako Suguru also made history, setting a new national best mark by a single second, finishing in 2:04:55.

And this is the part most people miss... In a surprising twist, Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee, demonstrated his versatility by becoming the second-fastest British marathoner, clocking in at 2:06:38. Yee's seventh-place finish propelled him ahead of Emile Cairess on the all-time GB leaderboard, placing him just behind the legendary Mo Farah.

But here's where it gets controversial... Could Yee's success in the marathon spark a new trend of multi-sport athletes excelling in distance running? What do you think about the rise of athletes crossing over into different sports? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
