Korir, fresh off his Boston Marathon win earlier in the year and a victory at the Chicago Marathon the previous year, was determined to rebound from a setback in Chicago in October. "It's not easy sometimes to say I'm proud of me but finally I can say I'm proud of me," he shared. "The season was so long, I started last year 3 December to train for all the competitions. I'm so happy that I made it. The main goal was to break my national record and I made it."
Adding to the excitement, Awet Kibrab of Norway finished third, rewriting his nation's record books by taking 1:24 off the previous best time, finishing in 2:04:24. Japan's Osako Suguru also made history, setting a new national best mark by a single second, finishing in 2:04:55.
