In Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, 39-year-old Scelo Mwelase's life was tragically ended on Sunday, December 7th, allegedly at the hands of his wife, within the walls of their residence. The Mwelase family, initially full of hope and joy, celebrated the payment of lobola (bride price) for their son, believing that their daughter-in-law would bring peace, stability, and love to their household. Sadly, this positive anticipation turned into grief quite quickly.
According to Mduduzi, Scelo's uncle, the chain of events that led to this tragedy began when Scelo returned home accompanied by a girlfriend, while his wife was present in the house. He recounts, "I was told that when Scelo arrived with the girlfriend, his wife responded by slapping her. The girlfriend then ran away. The wife then turned her anger towards Scelo, attacking him and stabbing him multiple times until he succumbed to his injuries." In a cruel twist, after the assault, the wife took both her bank cards and identification documents, then fled the scene, locking the door behind her and leaving their two children inside with their injured father.
Paramedics rushed Scelo to hospital once the incident was reported, but unfortunately, he was declared dead upon arrival. Family members reveal that Scelo had paid lobola for his wife in October 2025, emphasizing the deep stakes involved in this marriage. The family reflects on how they had hoped she would become a source of joy and togetherness, but instead, they are now preparing to mourn the loss of their loved one during what should have been a joyful holiday season.
In addition to their grief, the family emphasizes the emotional toll on the children, who have witnessed such violence. They believe counseling is essential to help them cope with what they've experienced.
The South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal confirmed that a murder investigation is underway. Colonel Robert Netshiunda stated, "The police in Mountain Rise have opened a case of murder. It’s reported that an argument between the suspect and the victim escalated, resulting in the stabbing. The victim was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries." He added that a 24-year-old woman has been apprehended in connection with the incident and is expected to face court proceedings in Pietermaritzburg soon.
